Newcastle United's Swiss defender, Fabian Schär, had to leave the game against Leeds United on January 7, 2026, due to a bad injury.
In the second half at St James’ Park, Schär got hurt when he went up against Leeds' Dominic Calvert-Lewin. His left leg seemed to give way, and he immediately asked for help. He was then taken off the field on a stretcher, clearly in pain.
Type of injury: Injured his left ankle (waiting to hear exactly what it is)
How it happened: He got hurt during a tackle while playing defense.
Right after: They had to carry him off the field on a stretcher, and his leg was in a brace.
What it means for the game: Newcastle still managed to win, 4-3, even though he got hurt.
Eddie Howe said Schär was quickly taken to the hospital to get checked out, and he's worried because Schär's ankle injury doesn't look good.

After the game, Howe spoke to the press, saying:
Fabian's in the hospital right now, and things aren't looking good.
The club hasn't shared the full medical report or when Schär might be back, but what the manager said suggests he'll be out for a while.
Losing Schär is a tough blow for Newcastle, especially now. At 34, he's been a rock in their defense and a consistent starter.
With other defenders already out, this injury puts even more pressure on the team. Manager Eddie Howe might have to look at bringing someone in during January or try out new defensive lineups for upcoming games.
Fabian Schär has been hurt before, like a head injury in 2025, plus hamstring and thigh issues, and a bad knee in 2021. So, he's spent some time off the field.

This new injury, though, looked pretty bad when he was taken off. It might be worse than his recent ones. We’re waiting for the team to say what’s wrong after they do more tests.
Right now:
Schär is still in the hospital for medical checks.
Newcastle is keeping a close watch on him.
There's no set date for when he'll be back.
The club will let fans know more once we have the scan results on the ankle. We're checking for ligament damage, fractures, and how long recovery might take.
